George Jamesone (or Jameson) (c. 1587-1644) was Scotland's first eminent portrait-painter. He was born in Aberdeen, where his father, Andrew Jamesone, was a stonemason. Jamesone attended the grammar school near his home on Schoolhill and is thought to have gone on to further education at Marischal College. Legend has it that Jamesone once studied under Rubens in Antwerp with Anthony van Dyck. However, this is yet to be proven as his name does not appear to be noted in the Guild registers of the town. However, considering that Rubens was exempt from registering pupils; this does not mean that the painter definitely did not study there. Jamesone certainly did complete an apprenticeship under the supervision of his uncle, John Anderson, who was a popular decorative painter in Edinburgh at the beginning of the seventeenth century. Jamesone finished this training in 1618. He is not recorded as being in Aberdeen again until 1620. Anna Maria Thelott, född 1683, död 1710, var en svensk konstnär. Thelott var en av de första självförsörjande och professionella kvinnliga konstnärerna i Skandinavien. Anna Maria Thelott var dotter till instrumentmakaren och konstnären Philip Jacob Thelott d.ä., som ursprungligen kom från Schweiz, och syster till konstnären Philip Jacob Thelott d.y. Hon arbetade redan som barn sin med far och sina bröder i arbetet med att illustrera Olof Rudbeck d.ä.:s "Campus Elysii" och "Atlantica", och bidrog snart till hushållets försörjning genom att ensam utföra olika konstnärliga arbeten mot betalning, vilket gjorde henne till landets troligen första kvinnliga yrkeskonstnär. Familjen bodde ursprungligen i Uppsala, men flyttade år 1702 till Stockholm efter den stora stadsbranden då en stor del av Uppsala brann ned. Thelott var en mångsidig konstnär som var kunnig på en rad områden; hon utförde träsnitt och kopparstick förutom teckning och illustrationer med allegoriska och religiösa motiv, miniatyrer och bilder av djur och landskapsmålningar. Hon utförde elva träsnitt av tyska städer med tillhörande informativ text på uppdrag av Posttidningen år 1706 och anlitades för att illustrera Peringskiölds arbeten. År 1710 dog Anna Maria Thelott i Stockholm som en av många offer för den sista pesten i Sverige. På Uppsala universitetsbibliotek finns en skissbok av henne utförd 1704-1709.
VARIN, Quentin
French Painter, ca.1570-1634 French painter. He was the son of a shoemaker and from 1597 to 1600 was in the papal territory of Avignon, where he worked with a local painter, Pierre Duplan ( fl late 16th century), enrolling also in the local painters' guild. By 1607 he had returned to northern France, and he was married that year at Amiens. In 1612 he was working in the Norman village of Les Andelys, and there he became Nicolas Poussin's first master. For the Gothic church of Notre-Dame, Le Grand Andely, he produced in 1612 a Martyrdom of St Vincent, a Martyrdom of St Clarus and a Regina Coeli (all in situ), the works that provided Poussin with his first contact with contemporary painting. These are the earliest fixed points in Varin's oeuvre, although a ruined Rock of the Philosophers (Rouen, Mus. B.-A.), reminiscent of such late 16th-century French Mannerist painters as Antoine Caron,
